Let’s Begin

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way.

A Tale of Two Cities

These here are wild times.

Things are moving faster than they ever have. Just think for a second on the nauseating, break-neck technological roller coaster that our grandparents found themselves on. My grandma was born without electricity or motor vehicles. The world she left included pocket-sized blisteringly-powerful devices from which all the history of the world’s recorded information can be accessed- instantly through thin air by a device in your pocket.

This is a world where humans can board a metal tube that flies through space and puts them on the other side of the planet in less than a day. This is a world where weapons have the capacity to wipe out entire countries- or maybe even all countries.

The future promises to be more dizzying. As technology progress faster, we become faster at becoming faster. The exponential technological changes in our lifetime will make our grandparents’ insane rollercoaster look like a gentle golf cart. Artificial intelligence, human engineering, nanotechnology, and the colonization of mars are just a taste of what could be on the docket for our lifetime.

At the same time that we humans are realizing the height of our power, I find it ironic (and a little scary) that we now find ourselves deeply divided on… just about everything. God, religion, politics, global warming, bioethics… basically everything from where we’ve come from to where we’re going.

All that to say… these here are wild times.

I know what you’re thinking (or atleast what I’m thinking). “That’s great and all, Brett, but..

Why are you starting a blog?”

Let me answer by asking a question.

What do you talk about on an average day with your friends and coworkers?

Even while while we stand at the precipice of apparent god-like power, while the issues of God and death an eternity linger, here in the age of evolution and dark matter, space travel and quantum mechanics and all these supernova questions of existence…

My guess is that you probably talk about what I talk about… namely the last score of the last Vikings game, your 401k, the best brand of diapers, or what went into those delicious caramel rolls.

Now don’t get me wrong. We all love the little things in life. But if Steinbeck is right and “some men think big, and some men think little”… then there’s a whole bunch of people like me out there who can’t stop thinking about these “questions of existence” but are cursed to spend their days talking about the things that don’t occupy more than a sliver of their thoughts and passions.

It’s a personal problem for some, and it’s a societal problem for all. The social norms, personality distributions, and more than that the technological reality of our modern day make for very few venues in modern life for talking about the things that really matter. I’m hoping that a blog might be one such venue.

And so, I submit to you, “Speaking Of Now”. My hope is to cover a number of issues that are relevant for today. If you’re looking for the smartest guy on the internet, that guy isn’t me. I write to start the thinking, start the conversation, and, as mentioned above- maybe this is just my own therapeutic outlet to process some of the million thoughts that I believe modern life inspires. So…

What will it look like?

My desire would be to write weekly… however, as long as I’m required to put in 40+ hours per week at a day job, that just ain’t gonna happen. For now, I’m hoping for one per month, but that will be mostly dependent on all the other thousand things going on in life.

And so I promise nothing but occasional thought-starters… but perhaps you may find some help or at least a fellow journeyer on the path of the lifelong pursuit of Truth.

See ya soon.
